About Us
Who We Are: BLEWISH (Black-Jewish) Roots & Wings is a nonprofit organization that is grounded in the legacy of Black-Jewish collaboration and alliances and brings together youth to learn, serve, and lead in their San Francisco Bay Area communities.
Our Inspiration: This organization is built upon and inspired by:
The words of Dr. King in his Letter From Birmingham Jail, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
In Judaism, according to the Mishnah “whoever saves a single life, saves an entire world” and we are taught the value of Tikkun Olam ״תיקון עולם״(“repairing the world”) to constantly strive to help the disadvantaged and address injustice.
What We Do: BLEWISH organizes joint community service projects throughout the Bay Area, establishes a mini-grant program, and hosts educational seminars and dialogue sessions that explore our shared histories, challenges, and experiences.
Our Beliefs: BLEWISH believes that when communities learn together, serve together, and stand together, they build bonds strong enough to heal divisions, promote inter-cultural education and awareness, and create a brighter future.
Through this work, BLEWISH Roots and Wings pulls from our shared history to inspire shared healing and hope, bringing together not simply two identities, but two resilient legacies.
